Venus Bay 2009 Report
Report by Toadie:
Well what a great morning it was, started off nice and early and we gathered in the beach 4 carpark for an impromptu bacon and egg brekky.
Around 6:45 we all headed off down onto the sand and walked about 200 metres to the right where davefar had spied a good gutter.

While everyone was busy setting up mick has is baits in the water and had caught a fish within the first 5 minutes

After a slight lull the action really fired up, hookups left right and centre for about an hour and a half. I think everyone got some decent fish, all around the 1-2kg mark.

davefar got the first double header of the day with 2 good sized fish, which gave his abu's a good work out.

There was a few mullet caught, and someone decided it would be fun to live-bait one back out, problem is it ended 100 metres to the left and wraped around 3 rods, must of been chased.

with plenty of berley in the water the fish really didnt stop biting until midday then it all went quiet.

we all packed up and headed off to where the bbq was being held

was a good turnout with around 15 members fishing and turning up to the bbq.
Biggest fish of the day was caught by either seadog or aspro, it was very debateable on who's was the biggest, both were within 3 millimetres of each other, so the prize was taken out by mark (4baits son) for his mullet.

once again thanks to everyone who came and helped out, really enjoyed the time fishing on the beach.
SEABITCH & SEADOG with a couple nice Salmon.

TRAILER LIGHTS TRADITIONAL OR LED’S

When trailer lights start playing up, most people suspect the light assembly itself, without thinking about the age or condition of the wiring. Most lights fitted to boat trailers are either sealed or submersible, with drain holes in the bottom to let the water out. So the lights are designed and built to be immersed in water.
Trailer light wiring on the other hand, is your standard five or seven core automotive wire, with no sealing qualities what so ever.
When your rewiring your boat trailer there shouldn’t be any joins in the wiring.

How do you accomplish this?

Simply run two separate wires from the trailer plug, one for each light, no joins. Even if you have clearance lights fitted to your wheel guards, avoid joins by running these two extra wires all the way to the trailer plug. It will take longer and you will need twice as much wire, but it will last a lot longer and cut out weak points in the wiring.

When wiring up the plug, solder the striped wire ends before fitting them into the plug. This will strengthen the wires and slow the corrosion process. LED lights have been around for some time now, more recent on boat trailers. As deck or cabin lights LED’s are the way to go. My customers are constantly requesting I fit LED’s to their boat trailer, but once I go through the pros and cons of LED’s they usually decide on the standard, sealed type trailer light’s that have been around for years and a good deal cheaper.

Lets have a look at some of the pros and cons. The most obvious pro is the efficiency of LED’s, their durable and long lasting if they’re not the cheap ones flooding the market. Some of the problems I’ve encountered with LED’s is, they do blow LED’s for no good reason, more often then they should, and you can’t just replace one or two LED’s you need to replace the whole light assembly, hang on to your receipts for warranty purposes just in case. Replacing a blown globe in a traditional type light might be a hassle but it’s easy and cheap.

Secondly and the biggest problem is linked to one of the cons, efficiency. LED’s don’t use much power; they only require a small amount of power to glow bright. With this in mind, think about what happens when you back your trailer in the water. Water will enter the trailer light wiring loom, all it takes is a small crack or nick in the wire insulation, and the two or more wires will short ever so slightly, but enough to power an LED light. When you turn on your indicator other lights can flash along with it, or turn on your lights and the brake lights come on. All sorts of things can happen.

Also salt water is more conductive than fresh and more of a problem. A quick fix is to blow compressed air down the wiring loom, but the next time you launch your boat the problem comes back, and its usually dark when we head home from the ramp, with the lights doing all sorts of weird and wonderful things. Replacing the wiring will fix the problem, but because LED’s are so sensitive to this, it wont take long before the wires crack again, and the problem can come back.

As this problem is presenting itself within the 3-month warranty period, I wouldn’t be surprised if new boat trailer manufacturers stop fitting LED’s to new trailers soon. Although LED’s have their cons I do have a lot of customers who haven’t experienced any problems. I personally prefer the old sealed lights with two round twist off/on lenses. A small amount of rubber grease on the rubber seals, and a sealant on the back where the wires come into the light will prevent water from entering, and preserve the lights.

This is just what I have experienced and my opinion, each to their own. There are ways of trying to seal up the wiring, like liquid neoprene, but I haven’t tried it so I’m not sure how long it would last or if it would work at all. Some of you might have experienced this problem, if so I hope this helps.

Happy boating
